COVID-19: Six Major Preventive Measures against Coronavirus & Why to Take Them?

Coronavirus global pandemic has shaken the whole world, many had left us, and a lot are currently suffering from it. It has been more than six months of this global suffering, yet scientists are still trying to find answers to the questions. Keeping our trust in healthcare professionals, the world is awaiting for its cure so that we can get back to the normal life once again.

Even though people are getting used to the situation and coming back to a routine referred as a new normal, but it is essential to practice major preventive measures issued by WHO. Here are the six major preventive measures against COVID-19 and why you should practice them.

1. Handwashing: Ensure Hand Hygiene!

Washing your hands with soap and water is one of the most efficient and effective ways that can significantly reduce the risk of getting infected. Why use soap? At the molecular level, soap breaks the virus apart as a result of forming bubbles around viral particles. So, when you pour water, it ends up washing everything away from your hands. To ensure maximum removal it is important to wash your hands at least for 20 seconds.

2. Use Hand Sanitizers: Reduce the Risk!

Even though handwashing is the best way to reduce the chances of coronavirus infection, still one can ensure the effectiveness of sanitizers if used in a proper way.  Why use hand sanitizers? Sanitizers provide protection in a way that a high concentration of alcohol in them collapses the viral outer layer. This causes the spikes proteins (involved in viral infection) to fall apart resulting in virus losing its integrity. The percentage of alcohol added into the sanitizers matters a lot where 85-95% of it is considered as an ideal range.

3. Avoid Touching Your Face: Save Yourself, Save the World!

Prevent touching your mouth, nose, and eyes. Why avoid touching your face? A healthy individual can get the infection by touching any infected area that might have a virus on and then touching his/her face. Your mouth, nose, and eyes act as a gateway for viral entry and putting you at a risk.

4. Wear a Face Mask: Ensure Maximum Safety through Minimum Spread!

Mask acts as a physical barrier to prevent you, others, and the environment from the virus. So, if you are going out, wear a mask. Why wear a face mask? The major reason for wearing a mask is to protect others, if someone is infected but doesn’t show symptoms, he/she can save others from getting the disease. Besides, it reduces your chance to get the infection as well.

5. Maintain Distance: Stay Home, Save Lives!

Try to stay home and avoid human to human contact. In case you have to go out for important chores, maintain a proper distance and avoid overcrowded areas. Previously CDC mentioned maintaining a distance of 6 feet but currently WHO suggests the distance to be 3 feet at least. Why maintain a distance? Close contact with an infected individual can get the virus through respiratory droplets which spread as a result of coughing, speaking, or sneezing. Even a person with no visible symptoms can spread the infection to others.

6. Self-Isolate Yourself: Prevent Further Spread!

In case you feel any minor symptoms of the disease such as fever, cough, headache, etc., immediately self-isolate yourself until you get yourself tested. Why should you quarantine yourself? You might have a good immune system but spreading it to a person who is more vulnerable can result in a critical situation. Thus, self-isolation is important as you must ensure other’s safety. That's the only way to stop the infection until we get therapy or a vaccine to be safe again.

Stay Safe & Take Care Everyone!
